Here is a very beautiful stromatolite form from the Precambrian of Australia. Authorities believe that stromatolites were formed by masses of green or blue-green algae, or ''cyanobacteria''. The depositional layers of this stromatolite are quite distinct and are 2.7 billion years old! This wonderfully banded slab has been highly polished on one side to reveal the beautiful colors of the mineral replacement. The colorful patches of jasper and the other banded minerals make for a very striking display. This is a beautiful slab of Jerrinah stromatolite from ''Down Under''.
