This is simply a HUGE specimen of Ecphora gardnerae from the Miocene of Maryland. This type of gastropod has been officially designated as the ''State Fossil of Maryland''. This 3-dimensional fossil has been removed from the surrounding matrix so that it can be viewed from all angles. The ornate gastropod is very well preserved and exhibits fine detail. The broad ornamental ridges that encircle the fossil snail are intact and clearly defined. The aperture of the gastropod is very clean, and the fine growth lines are easily seen. This is a fabulous display example of this classic gastropod from the St. Mary's Formation.
