Here is a very nice specimen of a Silurian gastropod. This fossil snail is Platyostoma niagarense from the Waldron Shale of Indiana. The quarry where this specimen was found was filled up with water. There is a fabulous gastropod specimen preserved on this plate. The fossil is extremely 3-dimensional and exhibits fine detail. The coiling pattern of the gastropod is well defined - even the very tiny inner coils of the specimen are intact. The dark fossil contrasts beautifully with the light-colored matrix. The gastropod is well showcased on the squared plate of shale. This is a textbook display specimen of a Silurian gastropod from this classic site.
