This is a nice plate of US ammonites. These are Scaphites from the Late Cretaceous of South Dakota. This type of ammonite has distinct ribbing and a rounded keel. These 3-dimensional ammonites are well preserved, and the natural coloration is easily seen - the iridescent coloration of the fossil is quite striking and contrasts beautifully with the greyish-brown matrix. The ammonites are wonderfully presented on the natural block of concretionary matrix that also contains many other fossils. This is a very displayable plate of colorful ammonites from the Fox Hills Formation.
