This is a very beautiful US ammonite. It is a very fine Hoploscaphites nicolletti from the Late Cretaceous of South Dakota. This type of ammonite has distinct ribbing and a rounded keel. This 3-dimensional ammonite is well preserved, and the natural coloration is easily seen - the iridescent coloration of the fossil is quite striking and contrasts beautifully with the greyish-brown matrix. The ammonite is wonderfully presented on the natural block of concretionary matrix that also contains another small ammonite. And the back side is also fabulous - both sides display extremely well. This is a very aesthetic example of this colorful ammonite from the Fox Hills Formation.
