This is a nice ammonite fossil. It is a fine specimen of Hoploscaphites mandanensis from the Cretaceous of South Dakota. This type of ammonite has faint ribbing and a somewhat squared keel. There is one rows of prominent nodes on the shoulders and near the keel of the ammonite. These features are very clearly defined on this specimen. The ammonite is well displayed on the natural block of concretionary matrix. This is an unusual type of iridescent ammonite from the Black Hills.
