This is a beautiful ammonite fossil. It is a colorful Hoploscaphites mandanensis from the Cretaceous of South Dakota. This type of ammonite has numerous ribs and many distinct large nodes. The keel is quite flat, with a row of prominent nodes on both sides. This ammonite is very 3-dimensionally preserved and exhibits fine detail. The cephalopod is extremely inflated and 3-D, and the reddish-brown iridescent nacre is beautifully displayed. The ammonites are wonderfully preserved in a small, natural block of concretionary matrix. This is a very displayable Hoploscaphites mandanensis from the Fox Hills Formation.
