This is a very distinct US ammonite. It is a fine Hoploscaphites nicolletti from the Late Cretaceous of South Dakota. This type of ammonite has distinct ribbing and a rounded keel. This 3-dimensional ammonite is well preserved, and the natural coloration is easily seen - the iridescent coloration of the fossil is quite striking and contrasts beautifully with the greyish-brown matrix. The ammonite is wonderfully presented on the natural block of concretionary matrix that also contains many other fossils. This is a very displayable example of this colorful ammonite from the Fox Hills Formation.
