This is a fine specimen of a cone from the ''Dawn Redwood'', Metasequoia occidentalis. This fossil is from the Oligocene Plant Deposits of Montana. The cone displays extremely fine detail. The spirally arranged scales of the cone are easily seen. The cone is still attached to its stalk, or stem. The specimen has great color and superb contrast and is well showcased on the natural plate of shale. This is a wonderful specimen of a fossil Metasequoia cone.
