Here is a very attractive fossil fish. This is Knightia eocaena from the Green River Formation of Wyoming. This specimen was found by Steve Hess in 2008. The large fish exhibits wonderful detail - the bone structure is well preserved, and the fins are easily seen. The eye socket of the fish is clearly defined, and even the the scale pattern is preserved. The fish has great, orangish-brown color that contrasts nicely with the cream-colored matrix. The fish is almost five inches long - very large for a Knightia eocaena. This is a large, detailed example of a fossil herring from the Eocene.
