This is a very fine fossil fish. It is a very nice Diplomystus dentatus from the Eocene of Wyoming. This fossil herring is complete and has great detail preserved. The bone structure of the fish is wonderfully defined - the eye socket of the fish is easily seen, and the fins and tail are beautifully displayed. The orangish-brown color of the fish contrasts nicely with the cream-colored matrix. The fossil is well showcased on the squared plate of shale. This is an excellent example of Diplomystus from the Green River Formation.
