Here is a very distinct fossil fish. This is Knightia eocaena from the Green River Formation of Wyoming. This specimen was found by Steve Hess in 2008. The fish exhibits wonderful detail - the bone structure is well preserved, and the fins and tail are easily seen. The eye socket of the fish is clearly defined, and even some of the the scale pattern is noticeable. The fish has nice, orangish-brown color that contrasts nicely with the cream-colored matrix. The fish is well showcased on the semi-squared plate of shale. This is a large example of a fossil herring from the Eocene.
