Here is a very fine specimen of Camptocrinus from the Paint Creek Formation of Illinois. This specimen was collected over 30 years ago and was recently acquired from a major fossil collection. This unusual camerate crinoid is always found curled, and the crown obscured with fine cirri. This one has the crown exposed, with is extremely unusual. The fossil has a beautiful red-orange coloration - this color is fully natural and not added. The fossil is well showcased on the rectangular matrix plate. This is a textbook example of a strange Camptocrinus from a classic collecting site in Illinois.
