Here is a very interesting echinoderm specimen from the famous Mississippian beds near Crawfordsville, Indiana. This is a very large, very inflated example of Actinocrinites gibsoni. This type of camerate crinoid has a large cup with heavily ornamented plates and long, branching, biserial arms that display fine pinnules. This specimen is extremely intriguing. A large starfish, Onychaster flexilis, is wrapped around the anal tube of the crinoid. This specimen represents a true symbiotic relationship. The starfish fed on the excrement of the crinoid. In doing so, it cleaned up the environment so the crinoid could keep living. One dark arm of the starfish is easily seen between the arms of the crinoid. A section of stem is still tightly attached to the cup of the crinoid. This fossil has nice color and contrast and is wonderfully centered on the rectangular plate of siltstone. This is a great example of Actinocrinites that also has a unique story to tell.

This fossil was collected and obtained legally, and is also being sold legally.
