This is an excellent fossil bivalve. It is a Chesapecten nefrens from the Miocene of Maryland. This large scallop has both valves intact and tightly articulated. Both of the ''ears'' of the fossil scallop are present, and the coarse radial ornamentation of the shell is easily seen. Both sides of the fossil are very clean and display beautifully. A small fossil barnacle is tightly adhered to the other side of the specimen, making for an interesting topic of conversation. This is a wonderful example of a fossil scallop.
