Here is an excellent insect entombed in Oligocene amber. This is an unusual Gall Midge (Cecidomyiidae) from the amber mines of the Dominican Republic. The piece of fossilized tree resin has been highly polished on all sides to reveal the fine detail of the insect inclusion. The insect is beautifully posed in the chunk of amber. The head, body, legs, and wings are wonderfully displayed - even the segmented antennae are quite evident. The insect can be easily seen with the naked eye in the light honey-colored piece of fossil sap. This is a very nice example of a Gall Midge preserved in amber from the Dominican Republic (small close-up photo included for free).
