This is a very nice insect entombed in amber. It is a Fungus Gnat (Mycetophilidae) from the Oligocene deposits of the Dominican Republic. The Fungus Gnat exhibits fine detail and is aesthetically posed in the fossilized tree resin. The head, body, legs, and wings of the insect are easily seen. Even the venation of the thin, gossamer wings is clearly defined. The insect is beautifully centered and easily seen in the golden-yellow piece of fossil ''ooze''. This is an excellent example of a Fungus Gnat preserved in Dominican Amber (small close-up photo included for free).
