Here is a very pretty specimen of one of the most sought-after fish from Wyoming. This is Priscacara serrata from the Eocene. This fossil "sunfish" is complete and exhibits fine detail. The bone structure is nicely displayed and the eye socket of the fish is easily seen. The fins are extremely well preserved - the sharp dorsal spines are very 3-dimensional and wonderfully extended above the body of the fish. The orangish-brown fossil contrasts very well with the cream-colored matrix. It is almost perfectly centered on the large, rectangular plate of shale. This is an excellent example of this "classic" fish from the Green River Shale.
