This is a fabulous stromatolite specimen. This is Collenia sp. from the Precambrian of Michigan. Authorities believe that stromatolites were formed by masses of green or blue-green algae, or ''cyanobacteria''. This stromatolite is estimated to be 2.3 to 2.5 billion years old! This striking slice of stromatolite has been highly polished on one side for optimal display. The gorgeous white and red coloration of the mineral replacement and the unique layering pattern make for a stunning exhibit. This is a very beautiful example of a Kona stromatolite from Michigan.
