Highly Ornamented Echinoid on Matrix Block
Stock Number  XIEC98

Name:   Actinophyma libicum
Age:  Cretaceous
Formation:  Echinoid Beds
Location:  Morocco
Size:  Echinoid is 1.4 inches across

Here is a gorgeous specimen of an ornate echinoid. This is Actinophyma libicum from the Cretaceous of Morocco. This echinoid is very 3-dimensional and exhibits excellent detail. The plate structure is just incredible. Under magnification, each plate displays a rugose, or striated, surface. This sea urchin displays the ambulacra beautifully and has rows of prominent tubercles on each side of the ambulacra. The fossil has very good color and contrast and is well showcased on the large block of matrix. The degree of preservation and the pentameral symmetry make for a fabulous specimen of this unusual sea urchin from Africa.
