Name:
Gymnites torrasi
Age: Triassic
Formation: Hallstatt Limestone
Location: Epidauros, Greece
Size: Ammonite is 4.2 inches across
Here is a very large ammonite from an unusual location. This is a rare species of Gymnites (Gymnites torrasi) from the Triassic of Greece. Triassic cephalopods are not common in the fossil record - there are only a few places in the world where they are found. This type of ammonite has a very smooth shell, faint ribbing, and a narrow keel. This very large specimen is quite 3-dimensional and exhibits fine detail. The coiling pattern of the mollusk is easily seen. The black ammonite sits on a huge block of the reddish limestone in which it was found. This is a very collectible specimen of an unusual Triassic ammonite.
