This is a very nice specimen of Acer lesquereuxi, a maple, from the Eocene of Utah. Maple leaves are highly uncommon at this site. This leaf should not be confused with the more common Platanus or sycamore leaf. The leaf exhibits all five lobes, and the toothed margins of the leaf are easily seen. The long, complete petiole is still tightly attached to the leaf and beautifully displayed. The leaf has great, natural color and contrasts wonderfully with the light-colored matrix. The fossil is well centered on the somewhat squared plate of shale. This is a fine example of a rare maple leaf from the Green River Formation.
