Here is an outstanding specimen of an unusual leaf. This is Sassafras sp. from the Eocene of Canada. This example is quite large for the type and exhibits fine detail. All three lobes of the leaf are beautifully displayed. The venation of the leaf is easily seen and the long petiole is still tightly attached. Although the leaf appears somewhat pale in the picture, it is actually quite dark. The dark brown leaf contrasts nicely with the light brown matrix. It is well positioned on the natural plate of shale that also contains another partial leaf. This is one of the finest examples of this unusual Sassafras leaf that we have ever seen.
