Here is a very attractive fossil leaf. This is Populus wilmattae, a Poplar, from the Eocene of Utah. This large leaf exhibits wonderful detail. The crenate margins are clearly defined and the very tip of the leaf is intact. The venation of the leaf is beautifully displayed - even the tertiary venation is easily seen with the naked eye. An extremely long petiole is still tightly attached to the leaf. The fossil has great color and contrast and is nicely displayed on the semi-rectangular block of matrix that also contains a number of fossil mosquitoes. This is a striking fossil leaf from the Green River Formation.
