This is a very detailed example of a very rare echinoderm. It is an excellent Camptostroma roddyi from York County, Pennsylvania. Camptostroma are some of the earliest known types of echinoderms - you may never see an older echinoderm. These enigmatic, disc-shaped, Medusa-like animals had a distinct plate structure and, almost always, an unusual orange-brown coloration. This specimen has great detail preserved, and the fossil contrasts very well with the lighter-colored matrix. The distinct plate structure is easily seen with the naked eye! This is a fabulous example of this classic Lower Cambrian echinoderm.
