This is a very unusual stromatolite slab from the Permian of Greece. Authorities believe that stromatolites were formed by masses of green or blue-green algae, or ''cyanobacteria''. This very large stromatolite is dated to just before the Permian Extinctions. This detailed slab has been highly polished on one side for optimal display. The unique pattern of the stromatolite is beautifully showcased, and the different shades of the mineral replacement are quite striking. This is a very fine, large example of this historically important stromatolite from Greece.
