This is a very detailed example of a very rare echinoderm. It is an excellent Camptostroma roddyi from Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. Camptostroma are some of the earliest known types of echinoderms - you may never see another Lower Cambrian echinoderm. These enigmatic, Medusa-like animals had a distinct plate structure, radial design, and an unusual orange-brown coloration (in the Kinzers Formation). This fossil has great detail preserved and contrasts well with the lighter-colored matrix. The distinct plate structure and radial detail is easily seen with the naked eye! This is a fabulous example of this classic Lower Cambrian echinoderm.
