This is an extremely rare fossil insect. It is a very detailed Beefly from the Green River Formation of Colorado. Ground-dwelling insects are relatively common fossils, and flying insects are also occasionally unearthed. But one of the rarest and most unusual fossil insects in the world is a fossil Beefly. This specimen has the head, body, and fragile legs nicely intact. The textbook stalked eyes, LONG proboscic, and remains of the wings are easily seen. The overall detail of the Beefly is just exceptional, and the natural color and contrast are quite striking. The fossil insect is well showcased in the large plate of shale that also contains a nice fossil seed. This is very rare fossil Beefly, exquisitely preserved in the Green River Shale.
