Here is a fabulous ammonite fossil. It is a large Dactylioceras commune from the Jurassic of England. This specimen was acquired from the famous Chance Collection. This type of ammonite has many, MANY whorls with closely-spaced ribs and a very rounded keel. In fact, this type of ammonite has so many coils,it has been referred to as a "Snakestone" for hundreds of years! This specimen is quite 3-dimensional and exhibits fine detail - the ribbing pattern is easily seen, and MANY of the tiny inner whorls are still intact. The cephalopod has very good, slightly pyritized color and is beautifully displayed on the natural concretionary matrix with a sawed base for display. This is a very striking example of this many-whorled "Snakestone" ammonite from England. (Comes with Dr. Chance's original reference photo and ID notes.)
