Here is a very attractive specimen of Populus wilmattae, a poplar, from the Eocene of Utah. This fossil leaf exhibits wonderful detail. The venation of the leaf is beautifully displayed - even the tertiary venation is clearly defined. The crenate margins are easily seen and the long, attenuate tip is intact. The extremely long, complete petiole is still tightly attached. There is also another leaf, Mimosites coloradensis, present on the plate. This leaf still has a slight amount of matrix covering a portion of the fossil. It appears that this matrix could be easily flaked off to reveal the entire leaf. The leaves have great color and contrast. They are well presented on the rectangular plate of shale. This is a very nice plate of two different leaves from the Green River Shale.
