Here is a nice fossil crustacean from a classic location. This is Belotelson magister from the Mazon Creek fauna of Illinois. This famous site (Pit 11) has been closed to collecting for a number of years. The shrimp is well preserved in a siderite concretion. Both halves of the concretion are present, so both part and counterpart are intact. The shrimp exhibits fine detail - the head, body, and legs of the shrimp are wonderfully displayed. The fossil has very good color and contrast and is almost perfectly centered in the concretion. This is a great example of a rare fossil shrimp from the Coal Age.
