This is a very rare arthropod fossil. It is a distinct Alalcomenaeus cambricus from the famous Chengjiang locality in China. This site is known worldwide for soft-body preservation of Lower Cambrian animals. The fauna is very similar to the Burgess Shale, but it is OLDER! Many one-of-a-kind organisms have been described exclusively from this formation. A similar type of arthropod (Leanchoilia) is also found in the Burgess Shale. This specimen has good, natural red coloration, which contrasts well with the orange-tan matrix. The definitive segmentation of this animal is beautifully preserved in this example. The organism is well centered on the large, unbroken plate of shale. This is a very collectible arthropod from one of the most famous invertebrate fossil localities in the world.
