This is a beautiful example of a colorful crystalline stromatolite from the Lower Ordovician of Wisconsin. Authorities believe that stromatolites were formed by masses of green or blue-green algae, or ''cyanobacteria''. This stromatolite specimen is believed to be 495 million years old! This colorful stromatolite has re-crystallized into a stunning display of druzy quartz. The natural, strawberry-red coloration of this stromatolite is simply beautiful. This is a wonderful example of the crystalline structure of a stromatolite.
