This is a very interesting fossil mollusk. It is a large Maclurites from the Ordovician of Minnesota. This unusual type of gastropod coils in such a pattern that all the whorls are visible on the flat lower side. This HUGE fossil snail is very 3-dimensional and exhibits fine detail - the whorling pattern is easily seen. The gastropod is beautifully displayed on the natural block of limestone matrix. This is a very attractive example of this unique Paleozoic gastropod.
