Here is an extremely unusual leaf. This is Oreopanax elongatum from the Eocene of Utah. This leaf is very long (almost 6 inches) and quite narrow. The smooth, entire margins are wonderfully displayed and the tip of the leaf has a slightly rounded point. This type of leaf has very strong primary venation, while the secondary and tertiary venation is very weak. The short, stout petiole is still intact. The brown leaf contrasts beautifully with the khaki-colored matrix. It is nicely centered on the large, natural plate of shale. This is an outstanding example of this unusual fossil leaf from the Green River Formation of Utah.
