Here is a very distinct specimen of Archimedes wortheni. This specimen was obtained from a major fossil collection - it was found over 10 years ago in the original, closed site in Illinois, not the current site in Missouri. This unusual, corkscrew-shaped bryozoan is only found the Mississippian of North America! This bryozoan colony attached itself to the ocean floor with the spiraling fronds in an upward position. The fossil is very 3-dimensional and exhibits fine detail. The natural color of the fossil contrasts wonderfully with the grey-green matrix plate. This is a fine example of this strange-looking bryozoan from the original locality.
