Here is an extremely unusual fossil algae specimen. This is Marpolia spissa from the Middle Cambrian of Utah. Marpolia was a thin, branching type of algae. The fronds are many and hair-like. This type of algae is also found in the famous Burgess Shale deposits of Canada. This specimen has wonderful form and extremely fine detail - the fronds are very easily seen. The algae is nicely showcased on the large plate of shale. This is a very fine example of this uncommon fossil from Utah.
