This is a beautiful ammonite fossil. It is a natural double Hoploscaphites nicolleti from the Cretaceous of South Dakota. This type of ammonite has numerous ribs that are coarse in the beginning and becoming very fine near the living chamber. The keel is flat and narrow with a row of prominent nodes on both sides. These ammonites are very 3-dimensionally preserved and exhibits fine detail. The cephalopods have the reddish-brown iridescent nacre beautifully displayed. The ammonites are wonderfully preserved in a large, natural block of concretionary matrix. And the larger ammonite is FIVE inches long! This is a very displayable pair of Hoploscaphites from the Fox Hills Formation.
