Here is a colorful ammonite. This is an iridescent Hoploscaphites nicolleti from the Cretaceous of South Dakota. This type of ammonite has faint ribbing and a somewhat rounded keel. There are several rows of prominent nodes on the shoulders and near the keel of the ammonite. These features are very clearly defined on this specimen. This ammonite is 3-dimensional and has the inner whorls exposed. The nacreous shell of the cephalopod is present, and many beautiful, iridescent colors are wonderfully displayed. The fossil is well positioned on the natural block of dense, concretionary shale. This is a gorgeous, very displayable ammonite from the Fox Hills Formation.
