Here is a very rare specimen of Archimedes sp. from Illinois. This unusual, corkscrew-shaped bryozoan is only found in the Mississippian of North America. This bryozoan colony attached itself to the ocean floor with the spiraling fronds growing in an upward position. This particular fossil is rare in the fact that some of the fan-like colony is still intact!! This is the best example of this fragile net-like fan still attached to the screw that we have ever seen. The fossil is very 3-dimensional and exhibits fine detail. The natural color of the fossil contrasts wonderfully with the grey matrix. The long screw is well presented on the rectangular plate of limestone. This is a very collectible example of this classic bryozoan with the colony still attached.
