Here is a very rare fossil starfish. This is a fabulous Protopaleaster narrawayi from the Fraileys Formation of Illinois. The site where this specimen was found has been dug out, and the only way to obtain specimens from this site is through the dispersal of old collections. This specimen was recently acquired from an old collection. This starfish is nicely inflated and exhibits wonderful detail. The plate structure of the echinoderm is clearly defined. The starfish is well centered on the square plate of shale. This is a very nice example of an extremely rare starfish from Anna, Illinois.
