This is an excellent fossil nautiloid. It is a Cymatoceras sakalavus from the Cretaceous of Madagascar. This extremely robust cephalopod has been removed from the surrounding matrix and cut in half and polished. The primitive, straight-line sutures define this fossil as a nautiloid rather than an ammonite. The coiling pattern of the nautiloid is easily seen, and the individual body chambers are quite distinct. The central siphuncle is even exposed. The nautiloid has been highly polished, and the natural coloration makes for a nice display. This is a colorful specimen of an uncommon coiled nautiloid from the Cretaceous.
