This is a beautiful ammonite. It is a very large Speetoniceras versicolor from the Cretaceous of Russia. This type of ammonite has strong ribs that bifurcate near the rounded keel. This cephalopod is extremely 3-dimensional and exhibits wonderful detail. The ribbing pattern of the mollusk is quite evident, and the extremely tiny, inner whorls of the ammonite are easily seen. The colorful nacreous shell of the ammonite is still intact and contrasts well with the light-colored matrix. The ammonite is wonderfully centered on the sculpted plate of concretionary limestone. This is a fantastic display specimen of a Cretaceous ammonite that could easily be the centerpiece of any ammonite collection.
