Here is a beautiful ammonite from an unusual location. This is Gymnites incultus from the Triassic of Greece. Triassic cephalopods are not common in the fossil record - there are only a few places in the world where they are found. This ammonite has been polished to reveal the striking blood red color. Polished specimens are prized - most ammonites from this locality do not take a polish. This large specimen is quite 3-dimensional and exhibits fine detail. The ammonite displays beautifully on a small limestone base. This is a very colorful specimen of a Triassic ammonite from Greece.
