Here is a primitive echinoderm fossil. This is a rare cystoid (Pleurocystites filitextus) from the Ordovician layers of Iowa. This specimen was found YEARS ago, and was recently acquired from an OLD collection. The plate structure of this extinct echinoderm is quite distinct and easily seen. The detail of the cystoid is excellent - parts of the uniserial arms are intact, which is highly unusual. A long portion of the stem is still tightly attached. The cream-colored fossil contrasts nicely with the yellowish matrix. The cystoid is beautifully showcased on the semi-rectangular plate of limestone. This is a very rare example of this unusual Ordovician echinoderm from Iowa.

This fossil was collected and obtained legally, and is also being sold legally.
