Here is an extremely detailed example of a classic fossil fish. This is Diplomystus dentatus from the Eocene of Wyoming. This large fossil herring is beautifully fossilized and preserves very fine detail - the bone structure of the fish is wonderfully defined, the eye socket of the fish is easily seen, and the fins and tail are nicely displayed. Even the extremely fine scale pattern is intact! The striking, orange-brown color of the fish contrasts beautifully with the cream-colored matrix. The distinct fossil is very well showcased on the semi-rectangular plate of shale. This is a very detailed example of Diplomystus from the Green River Formation.
