Here is an excellent example of Persea coriacea. This leaf is from the Eocene of Utah. This oval-shaped leaf has a cuneate base and an acuminate apex. The dentate margins of the leaf are beautifully displayed and the primary venation is easily seen. The petiole of the leaf is intact and tightly attached. This dark brown fossil leaf contrasts nicely with the khaki-colored matrix. It is well centered on the natural plate of shale. This is a very pretty specimen of Persea, a member of the Laurel family.
