Here is a large, detailed example of a classic fossil fish. This is Diplomystus dentatus from the Eocene of Wyoming. This large fossil herring (almost 5 inches long) is beautifully fossilized and preserves very fine detail - the bone structure of the fish is wonderfully defined, the fins and tail are easily seen, the eye socket is well displayed, and the upturned mouth adds a certain charm. The striking, orange-brown color of the fish contrasts beautifully with the cream-colored matrix. The impressive fossil is well showcased on the large, rectangular plate of shale. This is a very cool, large example of Diplomystus from the Green River Formation.
