This is a beautiful crab from a very unusual location. It is Carcinus exculptus from the Miocene of Italy. This site is known for the large assortment of fossil animals found there, but crabs are extremely uncommon. This large specimen is complete with the legs and both claws intact (RARE!). The inflated crab has very nice detail preserved, especially on the carapace and large claws. The fossil crustacean has great natural color and displays impressively on the rectangular block of sandstone. This is a fabulous example of this very distinct crab from Italy.
