This is an incredible example of a rare fossil starfish. It is a HUGE Loriolaster mirabilis from the renowned Bundenbach slate of Germany. For many years, this slate was quarried for use in the roofing industry. Since the quarries have closed, the only way to acquire specimens is from old collections - this specimen IS from an old German collection. Complete starfish are rare in the fossil record, and examples this large and displayable are almost unheard of. This specimen is wonderfully preserved - the skin-like sac between the arms is extremely detailed and clearly defined. The starfish is so well preserved, it almost appears to be floating on top of the slab! The fossil has been replaced by iron pyrite or ''fool's gold'' and is beautifully displayed on the large plate of roofing slate. This is a beautiful example of a rare and unusual starfish from one of the most famous fossil sites in the world.
